MAITRI MELA (Environment Camp)

6th
MAITRI MELA
(Residential Environment Camp)
26th to 28th December, 2009

Theme
"Ecosystem based development"

For the past seven years Bal Bhavan Jaipur has been regularly organising the three day residential environment camp aptly named "Maitri Mela". Each December from the 26th to the 28th, young children from various schools and different socio economic backgrounds come together to spend three fun filled days in the lap of nature. The activities kick off with creative sports and include stare gazing, nature walk, bird watching, adventure sports, creative writing, poster/collage making and the eternal favourite ....... camp fire! The theme of the camp has always been 'friendship with nature'. This underlying thought is modified each year according to relevant current issues. For example, in 2009, in keeping with the Copenhagen summit the children worked on 'Ecosystem based development'. The aim of this camp is to bridge the ever widening chasm between nature and the individual which has been created by our modern way of living. The activities in the camp are designed to make the children aware of the critical importance of nature as well as sensitise them about their responsibilities as young citizens. The camp also serves as a selection event for "Dhara Doot" (Ambassadors of Earth). This is a team of young motivated individuals who follow up the activities of the camp by working all year round in their respective localities, schools and homes. Through these ambassadors the message of the Maitri Mela is spread far and wide.
